Southern cooking is known to be nutritious, fun and delicious. Apart from Ireland and Spain, Scotland, America, and England are other countries that southern cuisine can be attributed to. The best examples of southern cooking are Creole, Cajun and Floribbean (Florida and the Caribbean).

When it comes to the south, places such as Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland consider food as one of the aspects that make up its culture. Americans residing in these areas love squash, tomatoes, grits, and corn. They particularly enjoy deep pit barbecue, which was a practice inherited from American Indians from the southwest, specifically Native Americans that belonged to the Seminole, Caddo and Choctaw tribes.

Almost all southerners are fans of milk and eggs when it comes to cooking. This is something that came about thanks to Europe. The South loves to have full breakfast in the morning, which is why baked products and dairy products such as bread and cheese are well received.

Aside from potatoes and peas, greens make up most of a southerner’s meal and you better not forget the fried chicken. A southerner’s meal comes with pie or cobbler as well. The south is where American soups like chicken noodle, lentil, and split pea came from.

From green beans to okra, there are tons of veggies that southern folk adore and for their pies, nothing beats pecan and apple. Aside from corn bread, biscuits are also preferred by southern folk and for salads, fruits or garden salads are popular. Southern folk will not allow anyone to eat on a messy table as having the proper settings make food taste more delicious.

Corn bread is always part of the southern meal. Because of this need for corn bread, you can always expect a southern kitchen to have fresh bread. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, one of the “southern trinity” members must be present – biscuits, cornbread or rolls.

As an example of Southern cooking, cornbread is prepared using self-rising flour with the added ingredients of baking soda, baking powder and salt. It is important for milk, eggs, and shortening to be added to these basic ingredients. In some cases, the cook adds a dash of sugar.

The ingredients include 1 ? cups of self-rising flour, 2 eggs, 1 cup of buttermilk, liquid shortening (olive oil), all-purpose flour, a tablespoon of liquid shortening (oil for the skillet), and ? cup of sugar, if desired. Mix well and do not forget it. Pour the mixture into a greased skillet or muffin tins to make 12 cornbread muffins.

All breads in the south are served fresh from the oven. To do this, the oven is usually fired up to 450 degrees. Aside from not using plain old flour in their corn bread, southerners also use cornmeal when the dough is placed on the skillet for cooking.

See to it that you have dough that is not thick at all as this is not a good sign. Here is a tip for southern cooking that you can enjoy. There are other southern techniques in making apple pie, buttermilk biscuits, green salad, squash casserole and other southern kitchen staples.
